British Empire Medals 2024

On Tuesday 23rd April The Lord-Lieutenant presented 5 British Empire Medals and 1 Honorary MBE to Cambridgeshire residents recognised in the King’s New Years Honours list.

The Lord-Lieutenant was assisted by Colonel Roger Herriot OBE DL and the citations were read by Brigadier Tim Seal TD ADC DL VR, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz DL FRS FRCP FMedSci, Mrs Jennifer Crompton DL, Lord Grimthorpe DL, Mr Dan Schunmann DL and Ms Hanadi Jabado DL.  The High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, Mr David Way and his wife Rosemary, Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council, Councillor Sebastian Kindersley, Mayor of Cambridge, Councillor Jenny Gawthorpe Wood were present.

Ms Shelia Betts

Ms Betts received her British Empire Medal for services to young people.

Since joining the Girlguiding movement in 1992 she has made an immeasurable contribution. For over 30 years Shelia has used her professional skills in graphic design, marketing and communications for the benefit of Girlguiding.

Added to this Shelia has been Chair of the Management Committee for the Jarman Centre in Newmarket, and along with a small group of volunteers enured it remained fit for purpose.

 

Professor Daniela De Angelis

Professor De Angelis received her honorary MBE for Services to Medical Research and Public Health.

Professor Daniela De Angelis is an internationally recognised leader in the field of statistical methods for infectious disease. Her work has been instrumental in furthering the understanding of the epidemiology of infectious disease, including prediction of future evolution, and informing the implementation and evaluation of public health policies.

Mr Moez Nathu

Mr Nathu received his British Empire Medal for services to refugees and asylum seekers in Peterborough.

Moez Nathu, is the Chief Executive and co-founder of the Peterborough Asylum and Refugee Community Association (PARCA). Through his work at PARCA, Moez seeks to help refugees, asylum seekers, disadvantaged and migrant communities by providing them with support and the services they need to build a quality life and contribute to a cohesive community.

Mr John Sharman

Mr Sharman received his British Empire Medal for services to the community in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

John Sharman is a dedicated volunteer who has worked for nearly 20 years to the benefit of his local community and local environment. In 2005, John decided to make a difference for his community by turning his attention to Botolph Green, a former village green which had been neglected. He personally engaged in a leafleting campaign, distributing 1.500 leaflets to houses in the area, to seek volunteers to assist him to set up a residents’ association.

Mr Ken Winterbottom

Mr Winterbottom received his British Empire Medal for his services to the community in Whittlesford, Cambridgeshire.

Mr Ken Winterbottom has been a stalwart of the local community, taking on a number of voluntary roles in the village and discharged each one with dedication and distinction.

Ken served and made an outstanding contribution as a Parish Councillor of Whittlesford Parish Council for 44 years, before standing down in 2022. He has also been a trustee of the Nicholas Swallow Charity, a School Governor at William Westley Primary School.

Ms Lorna Woor

Ms Woor received her British Empire Medal for her service to the community in Cambridge.

For over 40 years, Lorna Woor has selflessly dedicated time to support the community and charitable organisations. A retired nurse, Lorna has been committed to the well being of those around her which is reflected in the groups that she is involved in.

For 25 years, she has been the founder and driving force of the village Stitches group. The group has given many ladies from the village the opportunity to get together and produce beautiful embroideries for the local church and chapel.

Throughout the pandemic, Lorna continued to ensure that members of the group were able to meet regularly and carry on with their work by meeting virtually. She ensured each member was not isolated during this difficult time.
